No disrespect to Mr. McGuire and The Graduate, but I have one word for you…are you listening?
Magnets Are The Secret Sauce To Tech Goodness
Yes, we are still at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2014) in Las Vegas, tired, delirious and dehydrated from walking 14,304 steps yesterday…I counted. Okay, technically I didn’t count, but the FitBug Orb tracker I have been wearing is beaming it to my iphone…which is basically my brain, so yeah, that it like me counting.
But wait, maybe I did pass out after step 13,923 and start dreaming, otherwise how do I explain seeing this…
and maybe more disturbing, why am I dreaming of Gene Simmons? But I digress, back to magnets…
Yes CES2014 is filled with Bluetooth 4.0, 4K TVs, augmented reality devices, robots and cars that drive themselves but the technology that takes a technical marvel and transforms it into a functional marvel…magnets! Some quick examples…
LittleBits – The Satisfying Snap of The Maker Movement
LittleBits is a system of modular electronics that snap together with tiny magnets for prototyping and play. We have discussed LittleBits before, here is a quick video –
The thing is, build your own electronic circuit kits have existed for decades, but LittleBits added the secret sauce – magnets – and now kids and adults are snapping together electronic projects at record paces. The tiny, simple magnets in LittleBits means you don’t need to be a tech geek to enjoy the thrill of building your own electronic gizmos.
The Lenovo ThinkPad 8, Peek A Boo, I See You
The Lenovo ThinkPad 8 is a technical marvel. A gorgeous 8″ tablet that runs Windows 8 and is packed with an impressive array of tech specs. However, if a friend wants to show you how cool the ThinkPad 8 is they will show you this…
That is the magical magnetic QuickShot Cover on the ThinkPad 8. Keep your tablet covered, even when taking a photo. Simply flick back the corner flap to expose the lens, and the Windows 8.1 camera app will open automatically. The magnetic closure also triggers and wakes the tablet from sleep mode.
I saw this demo’d with the rest of the Lenovo Influencer Network folks at CES and it was the cover that woke us from tech overload zombie like state and made us say – WOW! Once again, it is the magnet that makes the tech functional and almost magical.
The Magical Hinge on The Lenovo MIIX 2
Clearly the engineers at Lenovo share my love for the Magnet Kool-Aid, because the MIIX 2 is another tech wonder made better by magnets. Yesterday we discussed how we are testing out a MIIX 2 Detachable Ultraportable. Well, truth is we never really could get to testing out the computer, we were too distracted by the magical magnetic hinge the MIIX 2 has.
Open the MIIX 2 and it feels like a regular laptop. You can even pick the thing up by the screen and the keyboard stays attached. That of course sounds like no big deal for a laptop, but the MIIX 2 has no physical hinge. The screen and keyboard are just attached by a magnet. Tilt the screen 10 degrees and the screen comes right out to produce an 11″ tablet. No latches, no buttons to press…just magnets working their magic. Take a look at this quick video we did showing the magic hinge on the MIIX 2 –
Pacemaker People, Be Very Afraid
We could go on and on with examples, but I think we have scared our pacemaker wearing audience enough. Magnets are everywhere here at CES 2014 and they are taking technically impressive products and making them functionally better. I think I speak for all Moms and Dads when I say that we could all use our gadgets being easier to use in our hectic and frantic world!
Yes, We Will Talk About More Than Just Magnets
Shocking as it may seem, there is more to CES 2014 than just magnets. We are about to hit the show floor again and look for full write ups next week on our favorite gadgets from CES 2014.
I just hope it is not too late for me. All my exposure to magnets had me seeing this on the streets of Las Vegas last night –
I’ll never look at Sesame Street the same again.
