A Dad can dream, right? Some guys dream about fancy cars or hitting the game winning shot. Me, I have a more simple dream, I just want to turn my backyard into a movie theater. I am thinking a drive-in, minus the cars. The idea of sitting outside and watching a movie with family and friends on a big screen, as opposed to all staring at our tablets and phones, just has a great deal of appeal.
Is The Epson Home Cinema 500 The Right Projector For the Job
I have completely mastered the art of making microwave popcorn, so the only thing from stopping me from having an awesome backyard theater is the lack of a projector. Questions such as how bright does the projector need to be, can it throw a large enough image and what type of connectors make the most sense have all confused me enough to derail my outdoor theater dreams.
Then the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 500 Projector arrived for us to review -
An Affordable LCD Projector That Packs A Powerful Light
There were a few numbers that jumped right out and impressed us about the Epson Home Cinema 500 -
The project has a very impressive 2,600 Lumens of color brightness and 2,600 lumens of white brightness. In addition, the Epson Home Cinema 500 is a 3 LCD projector which provides up to 3x brighter colors than leading 1-chip DLP projectors. The projector can throw a 300 inch image (25 times larger than a 60 Inch TV screen). Finally you get all this power and brightness at a very affordable $379.
Here is the quick rundown on the projector -
“Brilliant image quality requires high color brightness, and Epson 3LCD projectors have up to 3x Brighter Colors than leading 1-chip DLP projectors. Allowing Dad to harness 2,600 lumens of color brightness (color light output) and 2,600 lumens of white brightness, the Home Cinema 500 uses 3LCD, 3-chip technology for brilliant images with true-to-life color. The compact projector also features built-in set-up tools, a convenient HDMI input, and a 2W speaker with the ability to connect additional external speakers to make setup easier-than-ever for indoor and outdoor movie nights the entire neighborhood can enjoy. Simply plug in a Blu-ray® player, gaming console or streaming media player to play super-sized videogames or watch Dad’s favorite flicks.”

The planning is now under way for an outdoor movie night and we will have a full review with video as soon as the details are ironed out. We have been playing with the Epson Home Cinema 500 indoors and we are impressed. Incredibly simple to setup, a wide range of input options (view the Epson site for full tech specs) and a very BRIGHT image. In addition, the projector is lightweight and even comes with its own travel bag to make shuttling it around a breeze.
We will have a complete Movie Night review in the next few weeks, but with Father’s Day right around the corner, we wanted to let everyone know that this would make a great Father’s Day gift. The Epson Home Cinema 500 3LCD projector provides a relatively inexpensive and easy way for any Dad to create his own indoor or outdoor cinema. What Dad shows in his theater…that is the topic for a whole different post!
