I always thought there were really only two negatives to being a guy. First, we will all need to endure a prostate examination at some point in our life and second, we have to deal with the hassle and discomfort of shaving every morning. Now Philips Norelco is claiming they have knocked one of the negatives out…sorry, it is not the prostate exam. The Philips Norelco SensoTouch 3D Electric Razor does claim to remove the hassle and discomfort of shaving, and if that were true I would be a happy man…until I needed a prostate exam.
Not Your Daddy’s Electric Razor
We were able to secure a SensoTouch 3D Razor (1290x was the exact model we tested) and the moment we held it we realized this was not your Daddy’s razor. Traditional electric razors have been crude pieces of a machinery, basically small lawn mowers for your face. In my experience, electric razors are good for a few things – irritating your face, creating the illusion that you never shave and giving you a headache from their loud whining.
The moment you pick up the SensoTouch 3D Razor you realize that things are going to be different with this razor. First the razor looks beautiful, like something the wizard designers at Apple would have dreamed up. Before we get into our experience in using the razor, let’s run through its features.

All The Specs Are Great on Paper, But How Does It Work In The Bathroom?
There is no question the SensoTouch 3D sounds fabulous on paper but we don’t care about that, we want to know how it works in the real world. We tested the SensoTouch 3D for a few weeks and we have to say, it is the best electric razor we have ever used – by a wide margin!
It takes a couple of days to really adjust to the SensoTouch 3D, but once you do, you will never go back to your old razor. You can use the SensoTouch 3D wet or dry. Shave in the shower or in the driveway. Shave with shaving cream or dry. This is what is so great about the SensoTouch 3D, it seamlessly works with your habits.
You get a very close shave with the SensoTouch 3D and no irritation. Shaving with shaving cream does get the closest shave, but if you are in a hurry, go dry and still get a nice shave. Use the trimmer feature to get hard to reach spots and when you are done simply wash out the razor – it is completely waterproof. Drop it back in the charger stand…or don’t! You get 60 minutes of shave time so you can go weeks between charging. Don’t worry about guessing how much power you have left, the razor displays exactly how many minutes you have left. Are you seeing why we love this razor – it is so friendly, easy to use and works with us, not against us!
The Heads, It is All About the Heads
I am not going to pretend I know exactly why the Philips Norelco SensoTouch 3D is light years better than the competition, but my guess would be the heads on the razor. The three heads move in all directions (thus the 3D) and really contour to your face. Then you have the slots on each head for long hairs, channels for the longer hairs, and holes for the shortest stubble. Somehow it all works together to give you a close and comfortable shave.
Here are some images of the 3D heads –
The SensoTouch 3D Makes a Great Travel Companion
The fact that you get 60 minutes of shave time on one charge means you probably will never need to bring the charger with you when you travel. Just put the SensoTouch 3D in travel lock mode (yes, it has this feature so it doesn’t accidentally go on in your luggage) and then put it in the included pouch and you are ready to go. No shaving cream necessary, you can go dry if you like.

Conclusion: The Philips Norelco SensoTouch 3D Is The Electric Razor You Always Wanted
If you got a bunch of guys into a room and had them come up with exactly what they would want in an electric razor, it would probably look a lot like the Philips Norelco SensoTouch 3D. The SensoTouch 3D gives you a clean shave without irritation and is flexible enough to adapt to your own busy lifestyle. The only real negative is the price tag, but factor the cost of $249 over a a few years of more pleasant shaving experiences every morning and it is well worth it.
Next up, Philips Norelco needs to invent a way to make a prostate exam less horrible.
