Review: LifeProof iPhone Case, Even The Kids Can’t Wreck Your Phone Now

LifeProof iPhone Case

As parents we know all too well that stuff  happens.  Drinks are spilled, things are dropped (or thrown) and messes of unknown entities are made.   For the most part we can just laugh off these events, but when all this stuff is happening to your brand new iPhone…the laughter stops!

Bring laughter at accidents and mistakes back into your life  with the LifeProof iPhone Case.  The LifeProof iPhone cases are water proof, snow proof, shock proof and dirt proof.  Or let me put that more simply…they are kid proof!  In theory, when your child grabs your phone to play Angry Birds and while sliding his greasy hands across the screen drops your phone…into the dog’s water bowl…all will be fine?  This we had to see to believe…

Please watch our video review of the LifeProof iPhone Case…

Liquids and iPhones, Best Buddies At Last

iPhones are incredible pieces of technology, but water has always been their kryptonite.    This has meant that there are certain places your iPhone just doesn’t do well – the beach, the pool, in the rain, on the ski slopes, in the Rain Forest, on a boat and even in your kitchen.   Yes, 21% of iPhone accidents in the home happen in the badlands of the kitchen (see the infographic).

The completely waterproof LifeProof case changes the whole dynamic between your phone and the water.  Now you can listen to tunes while you swim and ski.  Catch up on Seinfeld episodes while standing in the shower (your one escape from the kids).  Use all those cool health and fitness apps without fear of trashing your phone while you run, sweat, swim and cycle.  The LifeProof case does not just protect your iPhone, it opens up a whole new wet world of fun to your iPhone.

Lots of Protection With Little Bulk

As we discuss in the video review, there are numerous impressive features to the LifeProof case.  Gortex membranes over the speakers, real optical anti-reflective glass  to cover the camera lens and patented sound enhancement system to name just a few.

Here is a quick run down on all the features and specs:

  • Water Proof, Dirt Proof, Shock Proof and Snow Proof
  • Protects against every-day hazards—full IP-68 rating against water and dust, and designed to Military Specifications
  • High degree of shock and impact protection—tested to Military Specifications MIL-STD-810F-516.5 (2 meters/6.6ft drop on all surfaces and edges. 26 tests)
  • Fully sealed protection against minute dust particles
  • Ability to swim and take underwater (2 meters/6.6ft depth).
  • Unique combination of materials that will not stick to your pocket
  • Double AR-coated optical glass lenses provide unprecedented crystal-clear photo and video quality
  • All phone features are operational while maintaining a high level of protection
  • Improves the bass and mid-frequency speaker response by utilizing the back of the case as a sub-woofer for a richer, fuller sound.

While all of the above is very impressive, perhaps most impressive of all is getting all of that protection in such a slim and beautiful case. The LifeProof weights under 1 ounce and adds just 1/16″  to the thickness of the phone.

Why Would You Spend $70 on An iPhone Case?

The only real negative to the LifeProof case is the price.  An iPhone 4 case is about $70, with the iPhone 5 case costing about $80.  Why spend this much money on a case when you can buy a “regular” case for $15?  The answer is peace of mind and beautiful design.

We recently reviewed an iPhone 5 Warranty from Square Trade.  The cost is $94 for two years of complete protection…with a $50 deductible.  So, let’s say little Jimmy dumps his apple juice on your insured phone – for $50 you can get it replaced.  This is much better than spending $600 to buy a replacement for an uninsured phone.

Of course if you had your phone in the LifeProof case Jimmy could give your phone a bath in apple juice and it would be fine.  No $50 deductible after spending $94 on insurance.  In addition, you have a phone you can take swimming, skiing, running and maybe most importantly, hand to the kids and not worry about them wrecking it!  When you look at things in this light, the $70 or $80 price tag makes much more sense.

Conclusion:  LifeProof Cases Make Your Life Less Stressful and Who Wouldn’t Love That?

Here at Dad Does we have a very simple test when evaluating a product – does the product make a parents life a little easier, better or more fun in some way.  The LifeProof Case passes this test with flying colors.  A water proof, shock proof, dirt proof and snow proof case means that parents can enjoy their iPhone without any stress of breaking it.

LifeProof makes cases for the iPhone 5, the iPads and soon the Samsung Galaxy SIII.  If you are looking for a way to enjoy your gadgets to the fullest, without any fear, we highly recommend the LifeProof cases.  Now I can’t wait for a hurricane blizzard dirt devil earthquake to hit to test my LifeProof case…oh wait, I could just give my phone to my kids, which is basically the same experience.

Yeah, the Nuud – the iPad case is VERY cool. We saw a demo at the CES Press Preview show and it was impressive. The Nuud has no screen over the iPad screen, so nothing gets in the way of your fingers touching the screen. Still, the case is completely water proof, which is pretty amazing.
