Something went terribly wrong over at Air Hogs or Spin Master. I am sure that when they came up with the concept of the Air Hogs Moto Frenzy Stunt Bike, people were excited. The idea of a tiny remote controlled (RC) motorcycle that can zip around, do wheelies, all without falling over is a great one – on paper. The reality of what made it into the toy stores this year is a completely different story.
Moto Frenzy – Like a One Trick Pony With a Broken Leg
The wow factor on the Moto Frenzy is that it is an actual 2 wheel motorcycle . It is advertised as a two wheel motorcycle that can stay balanced and even do wheelies. This is the one trick pony part. The fact that in reality it rarely stays upright and wheelies are as common as a five leaf clover – this is the broken leg part.
The Moto Frenzy – The Toy That Puts Kids in a Why Doesn’t It Work Frenzy!
We wanted to show you the R/C Moto Frenzy in action, which was a challenge as sometimes it just doesn’t work at all. You need to charge it up for 30-50 minutes, but even after hours of charging, it often didn’t have enough power to stay upright for even a few seconds.
We did manage to get it going a little, here is the video –
Using the Moto Frenzy, An Exercise in Futility
First step, load the remote up with 6 batteries. Next step, plug the motorcycle into the remote and let it charge for 30-50 minutes. Next, repeat to kids 30 times, “No, it is not done charging – you can’t play with it yet“. Finally, put charged Moto Frenzy on the ground, watch it go for a little bit, keep picking up when it falls over, everyone yells at each other “no you’re not doing it right – it keeps falling!” About 10 minutes later, charge is dead – rinse and repeat for more holiday fun.
I know this all sounds very harsh, but the toy simply fails at every real world level. I assume the reason ours stop working is because if any hair or dirt gets on the tires, the Moto Frenzy will not function properly. This is a kid’s toy – that drives all over the ground – of course dirt will get on it! We tried cleaning the tires – sometimes it would go a little, other times it would not work at all. Some days we charged it for hours and it still didn’t have any power.
Let’s assume for a minute that it did work exactly as advertised. Even so, it is still not a great toy. You need to charge for 50 minutes for 10 minutes of playtime. It is very hard to drive and control – there is no stopping, just turn left and right. Best case scenario, kids would find it cool for a couple of minutes and then off to the toy heap in the closet.
It is Not Just Us, Look at Amazon.Com
It did occur to me that we might have just purchased a defective unit. I went over to Amazon.Com to look at the reviews there and guess what – all 1 star reviews! Yes, everyone had the exact same issues we had – so clearly the issue is not just with our unit, the Moto Frenzy Stunt Bike is just poorly designed.
Time to Play Magazine – What the #$#@ Were You Thinking?
Companies will make toys they think will sell, so I understand why Air Hogs and Spin Master released this toy. What I do NOT understand is how this toy made the Most Wanted List at Time to Play Magazine. We have had Dads and Moms do real world reviews of all the toys on the 16 Mosted Wanted Toys for 2010 list and most were excellent. However, Time to Play dropped the ball on the Moto Frenzy – if you spend anytime with this toy its negatives will slap you in the face.
Conclusion on Air Hogs Moto Frenzy Stunt Bike (Spin Master)
Do we really even need a conclusion after this review? If you like to waste money and watch your kids get frustrated – then this is the toy for you! For the rest of us, there are plenty of other great toys on the 16 Mosted Wanted Toys for 2010 list, just buy one of those. I always like to end with something positive, so let’s see… if you do buy this toy, it is small, so it does not take up much room in the pile of junk toys that you wasted your money on and the kids never play with!
FULL DISCLOSURE: We were crazy enough to buy this toy with our own money! We received no money for doing this review and receive nothing if you do decide to buy the toy. Come on, is this disclosure even necessary? You think anyone would pay us to trash their product? This is a real review, by a real Dad (and his kids)!
