Summer 2012 is here! I know that because sweat is dripping off my head into the keyboard as I type, school is out, the kids are bouncing off the walls and I am marking off the days until school starts! We don’t give a lot of parenting advice on this Dad blog, but here is a gem…
Kids Outside, Nobody Pouts. Kids Inside, Mom and Dad Better Run and Hide.
How do you get the kids outside this summer? With fun outdoor toys for the summer!
Introducing Our Guide to The Best Summer Toys For 2012 To Get The Kids Playing Outside
In this guide we will be covering some awesome outdoor toys for kids of all ages (and even some for Moms and Dads). As always, every toy in this guide has been subject to real world, hands-on testing by Moms and Dads. In addition, our reviews are completely objective, we never charge any money to do a review (see our Product Review Pledge).
Fun Outdoor Toys Keep Coming In and This Living Guide Keeps Growing
We are starting this guide in June, but we will keep adding toys as the temperature keeps rising. We are constantly testing out new outdoor toys and games and will be updating this guide every few days – so check back often. Have an outdoor toy you really want to see reviewed? Just let us know – we aim to please.
Enough of the talk, let’s get right into some of the best Outdoor Toys for Summer 2012…
Nothing Says Summer Fun Like 360 Spins and Sparks
Razor FlashRider 360
As a kid I was a Big Wheel junkie. If I didn’t get at least 60 minutes of solid cruising on my Big Wheel, you really didn’t want to be around me. I used to believe that no 3 wheel vehicle could ever top the Big Wheel…until we tried out the Razor FlashRider 360. The back wheels can spin 360 degrees which means you can do crazy spins, drifts and stunts with the Flash Rider 360. The icing on the cake? Slam the lever down and watch sparks fly from the spark bar. So cool, your kids will forget it is 100 degrees out.
Price: Sells for About $100. Good for kids ages 6 and up.
Best Way to Have a Rocking Fun Summer
Prefer your vehicles with 2 wheels instead of 3? Then, you will love the Rockboard Scooter – a 2 wheel scooter with an awesome twist. Instead of kicking to move on the Rockboard you simply rock back and forth on the platform and hold on as you zip along at 10 MPH. Kids and their parents (it can hold up to 200 pounds) will be amazed at how fun it is to scoot without a motor or your feet ever touching the ground.
Price: $199. Best for kids ages 8 and up.
Most Surprisingly Fun Blaster Toy From a Scooter Company
Vapor Delta 500
When you think of Razor you probably think of scooters or the very cool Flash Rider 360 we discuss above. Super cool blaster guns on the other hand may not immediately come to mind. That all changes with the new Vapor line of blasters from Razor. New for 2012 is the Vapor Delta 500 Blaster. This gun shoots little one time use gel balls, called Vapor ammo. The blaster is a …wait for it… blast to use! Sorry, could not resist. The Delta 500 is an extremely fun blaster and since it is outdoor use only, it will have the kids begging to stay outside!
Price: $24.99. Ages 14 and up
Best Combination of Outdoor Fun, Nature and Learning
National Geographic Outdoor Explorer Toys
Remember when National Geographic was just a magazine? Today, the National Geographic brand can be found in many different places, including a new line of fun toys from Uncle Milton. The National Geographic Explorer Toys series has something for all types of little explorers. From LED shoe lights to a Deep Cave Explorer Echo Maker, these toys will have kids excited to go hiking and camping. And where there is camping, there is S’mores…and come on, what living breathing soul doesn’t like S’Mores?
Price: From $12 and up
For Kids Who Want to Take Catch to The Next Level
Djubi – A New Twist on Catch
Djubi is hard to pronounce, but incredibly fun and easy to play. Djubi (pronounced joo-bee) comes with two racquets (pictured above) and a ball with a rubber band like loop on top of it. To play, you hook the ball on your racquet, pull it back and launch it over 100 feet for your friend to catch in the net of his/her racquet.
Djubi can be played in the backyard or for some real fun, take it with you to the beach and get wet and cool while playing Djubi! Great for kids ages 7 and up (younger kids may have a hard time launching the ball).
What Is More Fun Than a Summer Water Gun Fight? A Battery Powered Water Gun Fight!
Nerf Super Soaker Thunderstorm
It is not summer until someone gets soaked in a water gun fight! The past few summers, older kids had a big advantage as they had the strength needed to pump the Super Soaker guns and deliver a soaking stream of water. This summer, younger kids can fight back with the first battery powered Super Soaker – The Nerf Super Soaker Thunderstorm.
No pumping required on the Nerf Super Soaker Thunderstorm, just pull the trigger and a stream of water shoots 25 feet. Don’t fret when you go dry, just pop out the clip and snap in a full clip and you are ready for more soaking fun.
Price: About $15. Great for kids ages 3 and up
What Is Better Than Tossing a Football Or Blowing Bubbles? Tossing a Football that Blows Bubbles!
Gazillion Bubble Football
Some kids love to toss a football around. Other kids love to blow bubbles. Make them both happy with one outdoor toy – the Gazillion Bubble Football. This is what you would get if a Nerf type football and a bubble wand had a baby. Simply dip the tail of the football in the bubble solution and then toss it to your friend. As the football flies, bubbles come flying out of the tail.
Price: About $15. Great for kids ages 3 and up
Zyphoon – For When Shooting the Kids With Nerf Darts Gets too Boring
Zyphoon Ring Shooter
In case you haven’t noticed yet, we like pretty much anything that shoots! The Zyphoon by Zing Toys put a different spin on shooting toys…literally. Load a soft nano ring onto the gun and pull back on the handle and watch the ring go flying over 55 feet. The company says it uses “Z-Spin Technology” to get the rings flying so far, we have no idea what Z-Spin is, but we do know it is fun to go outside and shoot flying rings at things!
Price: About $11. Great for kids ages 5 and up
For When You Need to Knock Over a Can…From 125 Feet Away
Air Hunterz Z-Curve Bow
Let’s be honest for a moment, who hasn’t found themselves standing 125 feet away from a can that they really just needed to knock over? Nerf guns, Xploderz, even the new Max Force line of blasters max out at 100 feet. Don’t be ashamed, we have all been there.
This summer, go old school with the Air Hunterz Z-Curve Bow and knock that can down with a foam arrow from 125 feet away! Yes, the Z-Curve Bow from Zing Toys shoots foam arrows over 125 feet – which is great, until you need to walk 125 feet to retrieve your arrows.
Price: About $25. Great for kids ages 8 and up
The Most Fun You Can Have Rolling a Piece of Wood
Like Bowling? Like Bocce Ball? Like games that are not made of cheap plastic? If so, you will love Rollors. Rollors is a fun outdoor game that you can play at the beach or in the backyard. The game is made of solid wood and combines elements of bowling, bocce ball and horseshoes. Great for kids and adults, Rollors will have the whole family playing, competing and having fun together outdoors!
Price: About $35. Great for kids ages 4 and up
Best Toy For When You Can’t Decide If You Want to Play With a Ball or a Car
Hot Wheels Ballistiks
Kids have tough choices they need to make over the summer. Playing with a ball is always fun. On the other hand, playing with cars is a great way to pass those hot summer days. Oh, the choices – ball or car… car or ball??? Now, thanks to the Hot Wheels Ballistiks kids don’t have to choose!
Hot Wheels Ballistiks are balls that transform into a car when they hit the ground. How would said Ballistiks hit the ground you ask? We like to launch them with the Ballistiks Catapult Assault toy. Finally this summer kids can play ball and cars at the same time – man I wish I was a kid again.
Price: About $15. Great for kids ages 4 and up
Toy Most Likely To Make Parents Obsolete This Summer
Kids love water balloons. That is just a simple fact of life. Unfortunately most kids have a tough time tying the knots in water balloons, which means Mom or Dad needs to be outside as the official water balloon knot doer. This summer make your self obsolete with the Tie Not.
The Tie Not is an awesomely simple device that hooks up to your water hose and allows kids to fill water balloons AND tie them with no help from us parents! Put a balloon on the Tie Not, press a button to fill the balloon with water, then pull the balloon off and it self ties. Moms and Dads, our days are clearly numbered…once they have self driving cars we will be completely useless to our kids.
Price: About $6. Great for kids ages 3 and up
