Nutrition Reviews

As parents, we are always dealing with change.  Kids growing up, new phases to deal with, new challenges – life is a fast moving blur.  So, isn’t it nice when we find something that never seems to change?  Here is a rock solid constant for you -  people are always looking for that magical shortcut to weight loss!

Dad Does Nutrition Spotlight on African Mango

As we discussed in this post on Supplement and Nutrition Reviews, we have decided to offer a new section where we look at some of the health and nutrition ingredients in the news and give you the 411 on the ingredient.  We are NOT claiming to be experts on nutrition and NOT trying to provide exhaustive research on supplements.

We are going to give you basic background and information on the ingredients in the spotlight, so you can be more informed about the pros and cons of the ingredients.  Use these Nutrition Spotlights as a starting point in your research on health, nutrition and supplements.  We promise to keep things honest, hype free and hopefully even humorous.

What Is African Mango?

African Mango

African Mango is the name of a fruit that grows in Africa.  Well, there you have it – close down the browser and we can all go home now…oh, you want some more info?   In that case, I need to admit we lied.  African Mango, Bush Mango, Wild Mango – those are all common names, but the actual name for the fruit is Irvingia Gabonensis.  If  I had a name like Irvingia Gabonensis, I think I would go with the cool African Mango nickname as well.

What Is The Deal With African Mango and Weight Loss?

Nothing!  The “deal” is actually with African Mango seeds and weight loss.  Some smart scientist decided to test the seeds of African Mango to see if they could help with weight loss.   Here is what they found…

In one 10-week double blind study, 102 overweight subjects received either 150mg capsules of IGOB131 extract or placebo, twice daily before meals. At the end of 10 weeks, the IGOB131™ group lost an average of 28 pounds, 6.7 inches from their waistline and reduced body fat by 18.4%. Also serum chemistry changes demonstrated IGOB131™ patients reduced total cholesterol by 26%, LDL cholesterol by 27%, fasting blood glucose levels by 32% and serum CRP levels by 52%.

To be clear, IGOB131 is a patented form of African Mango Seed Extract. In the above published, peer reviewed study, they used the IGOB131 form of African Mango.  Losing 28 pounds in 10 weeks, without changing diet or exercise is impressive.

Why is There So Much Buzz Now About African Mango and IGOB131?

I wish I could say it is because everyone reads Lipids in Health and Disease and was impressed with the clinical results on a scientific study of African Mango and weight loss.  In truth it is all about Dr. Oz. With Oprah gone, Doctor Oz has become the nation’s source of diet and wellness information.

In May 2011, Dr. Oz did a show on Breakthrough Fixes for Every Woman Over 40.  On that show he talked about how to lose 10 pounds and said, “Taking 150 mg of this African mango seed extract twice daily has been shown to help decrease weight and waist circumference“.   With that mention and a few additional mentions on other shows, Dr. Oz helped launch the African Mango weight loss frenzy.

How Does African Mango Help You Lose Weight?

It is magic we tell you!  That is how magic weight loss pills works…by magic.  I read that Leprechauns were involved!  Oh wait, I think I need new glasses, the word was actually Leptin, not Leprechauns.

The actual science behind how African Mango works in the body to possibly help with weight loss gets complicated and well beyond the scope of our site.  In short, Leptin is a hormone that plays a key role in weight management.  People who are overweight tend to have Leptin Resistance and African Mango can help reduce Leptin Resistance.

This in an incredible over simplification, and we recommend you read this article if you want to learn more about the science of African Mango.  One important take away is that African Mango does NOT work by doing dangerous things like increasing your body temperature or speeding up your heart rate.  Those are two things that parents do NOT need.  Our kids increase our heart rate enough!

Is African Mango a Safe and Effective Way for Parents to Lose Weight?

Don’t know.  The IGOB131 form of African Mango was shown to help with weight loss in a published, peer reviewed double blind clinical study – that is very positive.  On the down side, the study involved a relatively small number of people, so more research needs to be done.

If you are looking to give African Mango a try, here is some helpful information…

How Do You Pick the Best African Mango Supplement?

Very carefully.  The hype, misinformation and lies when it comes to African Mango supplements is off the charts!  Let’s stick with facts and science to determine what makes an African Mango supplement a high quality African Mango Supplement.

The only published, peer-reviewed, double blind clinical study that showed weight loss with African Mango used the IGOB131 form at a dosage of 150mg per serving. So, it seems logical to us if you want to try to replicate the weight loss that was seen in the clinical study, you want to go with a supplement that uses 100% Pure IGOB131 at 150mg per dosage.  This is not rocket science, you simply want to cut through all the hype and replicate what was done in the clinical study

Any African Mango Supplements We Would Feel Comfortable Recommending to Parents?

Yes.  The Perfect African Mango from Perfect Supplements is 100% Pure IGOB131, at 150mg per serving and absolutely nothing else.  Full disclosure, we have worked with Perfect Supplements and consider them friends of the site, we don’t feel this clouds our judgment, but  that is your call.  Feel free to visit their site, poke around, ask questions and do your own research.

In terms of other sources, you just want to make sure that the Supplement Facts Label list IGOB131 at 150mg per serving.  Just seeing African Mango and pictures of babes in bikinis on the bottle is just not enough!

CONCLUSION:  African Mango

Is African Mango a magic pill that will allow you to shed pounds with no effort?  Absolutely not.  Is Pure African Mango (IGOB131) another weight loss scam supplement?  No.  As always, the truth lies in the middle.   There is good initial research that African Mango could help with weight loss, but more research would be very helpful.   If you do want to try African Mango now, it is important you go with a pure IGOB131 product.

We leave you with The Good, The Bad and The Ugly on African Mango…

African Mango – The Good….

The IGOB131 form of African Mango has shown it helps with weight loss in a published, peer reviewed,  double blind clinical study (read the study).  This alone separates it from 99% of the other weight loss supplements on the market.

African Mango – The Bad…

The published study was small in size and there have not been large scale weight loss studies conducted.   Weight loss is extremely complicated and what works for one person may not be effective for someone else.

African Mango – The Ugly…

The web is fill with African Mango scams.  NEVER get an African Mango supplement that claims it is “Free” just pay shipping and handling – these are almost always a scam where you get auto billed every month.  Also stay away from any product claiming Dr. Oz endorsed it.  Doctor Oz has never endorsed any brand of African Mango.

Nice of you to up your click rate. The site Perfet African Mango says they are lab tested.
What lab?????????????? When you click on the lab symbol, you get hype. If they are tested by an INDEPENDENT LAB, they should be able to list the name of the lab and publish its findings. If it is not an independent lab, it’s findings are at least suspect and at most fraud.
