Cancer, Camping and Doing Good. Yes, You Can Make A Difference!

Cancer Connection

Cancer sucks.  Not even I would attempt to make some joke here or add levity to the disease of cancer.  The unfortunate fact is that cancer touches so many people, that virtually everyone has to deal with the painful realities of cancer at some point.  Cancer sucks, that is absolutely true, but that does not mean we can’t take steps to make living with cancer more bearable.

The Cancer Connection

The Cancer Connection is an incredible organization located in Northampton, MA.  Cancer Connection offers a haven where people living with cancer, their families and their caregivers can learn how to cope with their changed lives and bodies and emotional turmoil by sharing strategies and resources.   There are obviously huge physical aspects to cancer, but there are also mental and spiritual issues that need to be addressed.

There are plenty of organizations that help provide specific medical treatments for people living with cancer.  While these organizations are great, Cancer Connection looks beyond just the physical needs of people living with cancer.  Sometimes a deep massage can help someone feel better and reduce the endless stress of cancer treatments.  Perhaps a grandmother with cancer wants to make sure she can read books to her grand kids for years to come.  Cancer Connection can arrange to have a video made of the grandmother reading children’s books.  Really, what could be cooler than that?

What is the cost for all these services?  Nothing! That’s right Cancer Connection offers all of its services for free.  If cancer has touched your life and you need some help, the last thing you want to be doing is battling with insurance companies, so the Cancer Connection is there for you, free of charge, period.  So how does Cancer Connection come up with money to provide all these great resources?  By relying on incredible people like Monte and you!

Monte is Camping Out,  But Not In The Quiet, Tranquil Woods!

To help raise money for the Cancer Connection, Monte (a popular radio DJ) is camping out right in the middle of town.  Monte will start camping out on 3/14/12 and he is not leaving until he has raised over $25,000 for the Cancer Connection! Read all about it –

Cancer Connection Campout VI

Monte, from 93.9FM The River and 10 other campers are willing to stay as long as it takes until they break the $25,000 mark.

Cancer Sucks, But Helping To Raise Money for Cancer Care is Awesome!

Here at Dad Does we firmly believe that the world would be a better place if we all just took a few moments from each day and tried to do good.  We want Monte to have an incredible event and raise as much money as possible for the Cancer Connection, so we are helping out with what we do best…PRIZES!

To help create a fun environment at the camp site, we have worked with some incredible companies to provide some really fun prizes.   Here are some of the great prizes that Monte will giveaway to people who donate, both in person and over the phone…

What better way to pass the time when camping out than shooting foam arrows and balls?  Zing Toys has graciously donated four of the The Zing Shot Launchers.  The slingshot will launch foam balls over 45 feet – complete outdoor fun!   A great toy to play with while camping or spending any time outdoors.

More a bow and arrow guy then a slingshot fan?  Gotcha covered with the four Zing Curve Bows that will be given away. Launch foam arrows over 125 feet with the Zing Curve Bow.  Super fun and a great way to get the kids playing outside.  Visit the Zing Toys site.

The patented Rockboard Scooter comes fully assembled and can be folded to a compact size for storage. Ages 8+ and a 200 lb weight limit -so works for kids and adults.

Djubi – The Ultimate Game of Catch

Djubi Set

Djubi is the ultimate game of catch.  Djubi consists of two parts.  First you have a racquet with a deep net and a launch hook on top.  The second part is the ball with a rubber band like loop on top of it — this is called the Djubi.   Playing is as easy as hooking the djubi on the racquet, pull back and launch it.  The other player then tries to catch it with his racquet (a set comes with 2 racquets and 2 djubi balls), but be ready to run , the Djubi can fly over 100 feet!

Want to try Djubi out?  Monte will be giving away 2 sets of Djubi!  Visit the Djubi site.

KOA (Kampgrounds of America) Vouchers

Camping on the streets of Northampton is not the most peaceful camping experience.   On the other hand, camping at KOA (Kampgrounds of America) is the perfect way to enjoy camping.   KOA celebrates 50 years in business this year and is the world’s largest camping network.  KOA has campgrounds all across the US and Canada with a wide range of amenities.  Yes, you have your tent, RV and cabin camping – but some KOAs also have tree houses and old train cabooses you can stay in for a fun experience.

Regular readers know that I am a big fan of the KOA Virtual Campfire, but why go virtual when you can have the real thing?  Monte is giving away three KOA camping vouchers – good for tent, RV or cabin camping at any KOA!  If you are one of the winners, please make a S’mores for me.  Visit the KOA site.

Thank You Companies, Now Let’s Do Our Part

A huge thank you to the companies listed above that donated incredible giveaways for the Cancer Connection Campout.   The companies came through and showed that helping out and doing good is still alive and well in corporate America.  Now it is our turn to step up and help out!

Starting on Wednesday, 3/14/12, head over to the website for the Cancer Connection Campout.  If you are in Northampton, come by and make a donation and have some fun with the above toys.  Out of town?  No problem, you can call in your donation.  Who knows, you may get lucky and win one of the great prizes.   Even if you don’t win a prize, I guarantee that the warm and fuzzy feeling you get by donating and doing good will be a great gift in itself.

Reading this post after 3/14/12?  You can still help – just head over to the Cancer Connection website and make a donation directly.

Cancer sucks.  While we work, hope and pray for cures, the sad fact is that millions of families have to live with cancer today.  Cancer Connection does whatever it takes to make today a better day for families living with cancer.   This is a concept we can all get behind.
