The Top 6 Things I Learned Around the Campfire This Month

While I wish I lived in a tropical climate where we could go camping and have campfires all winter long, I don’t.  Up here in the Northeast, camping and having a real campfire in the winter months can be a bit of a challenge.  This is why I suggest you all join me around the fun and informative virtual campfire that is the KOA Community Campfire.

A Virtual Campfire To Top Any Virtual Water Cooler

If you want to know about all things camping, outdoor activities and road trips, the Kampgrounds of America (KOA) Virtual Campfire is the place to be.  Full disclosure, I am a community leader over at KOA (for which I am compensated), but don’t let that stop you – there are some other community leaders who actually know what they are talking about!  For me, I love posting questions and getting some great answers, tips and ideas.  With that in mind, we present…

The Top 6 Things I Learned This Month At The Campfire

6. This Holiday – We Geocache!

I have heard of geocaching before, but we have not tried it.  You use your GPS to find caches, with little treasures,  that people have hidden.  What a great way to get the kids outside and being active, while also learning about maps and tracking.  This discussion on outdoor activities for the holiday season got me thinking that geocaching could be a great activity to do with all the cousins during the holidays.

5. I Am The Last Person In the World to Know About Rain-X

Apparently there is this stuff called Rain-X that you put on your car windshield and it increases visibility in bad weather because rain and snow just bead up and roll off the windshield.  Who knew?  A great tip I learned from Vivienne, in her discussion here.

4. I NEED The LED Light You Can Blow Out

I fully admit to being addicted to cool flashlights.  In this discussion on possible gift ideas, Julie mentioned a LED Candle Lantern–it flickers like a real candle and you can even blow it out…but without the risk of a flame.  What a cool idea, it is going on my wish list!

3. I Learned a New Word – Glamping

Yep, Glamping, that is Glamorous Camping!  How exactly do you make camping glamorous?  Perhaps like this…

Nothing like being in the great outdoors…completely enclosed in a luxurious bubble!  Crazy stuff, which I learned about in this Glamping discussion.

2. Art Can Be Found All Around Us

In this discussion on Found Object Art, I learned some neat tips on art projects to do with the kids.  I love the idea of using objects found in nature and trying to make a sculpture, that is completely organic in design and also fun to make.

1. Before I Die, I Need to Eat a Campfire Cone

I always believed there was no debate on the ultimate campfire food, clearly it was S’mores and there was something horribly wrong with you if you thought otherwise.  However, this Campfire Cone has me thinking S’mores has some competition…

That is an ice cream cone stuffed with choc chips, nuts, toffee pieces, mini marshmallows, banana pieces and butterscotch bits.  I learned about this in the discussion on Campfire Cones and I can’t believe I never thought of this myself.   Oh, ice cream cone, how come I never understood your true potential???

There you have it, a small sampling of what I learned around the KOA Campfire in the past few weeks.  Come on over to the campfire and join us…we will keep a campfire cone warm for you!
