We Review Kre-O Transformers, Because Really, Who Doesn’t Love Transformers?

Kre-O Transformers

Kre-O Transformers from Hasbro

Transformers, more than meets the eyes.  Transformers, robots in disguise

The fact that I remember the above line from the Transformers cartoon theme song, from when I was a kid, shows the amazing impression Transformers have had on us.  Either that, or it shows I watched way too much TV as a kid.  In any case, Transformers are cool and I love the fact I can now get my kids addicted to Kre-O Transformers from Hasbro.

Kre-O Transformers, First Step, Transform a Bunch of Bricks into a Robot

The Transformers I had as a kid were all about twisting, pulling and bending a robot until it somehow turned into a vehicle.  While this was great fun, there was not much building skill involved.  The new Kre-O Transformers are what Hasbro calls “a brick based construction set” but really, all Moms, Dads and kids will look at it and immediately say, “Cool a Lego version of Transformers“.  Of course, legally Kre-O Transformers are not Lego (since that is a different trademark), but the easiest way to explain the Kre-O Transformers is to picture a Lego style construction kit (Kre-O kits are compatible with Lego sets and other brick based sets).

We Built The Bumblebee Kre-O Transformer Kit and Lived to Tell About It

To test out these construction kits we got our hands on the Bumblebee Transformer kit – all 335 pieces of it!  The first thing you have to decide is what you want to build first – the sports car or robot.  This is a very important point to understand, these Transformers do no transform by being twisted, pulled or turned – you must take it apart and rebuild to transform from sports car to robot.

This rebuild to transform can be seen as a positive or negative, depending on what your kid likes.  If they love building, they will find it very cool that the same set of bricks can be used to build a car or robot.  On the other hand, if they were hoping for a build once, transform quickly toy, this is not going to make them happy.

The instructions were very clear, so while it did take some time, it was not that difficult to build the great Bumblebee.   As an added bonus, Bumblebee does have a missile that can fire, and really, who doesn’t love a toy that shoots something?

Not A Bumblebee Fan?  Don’t Worry Kre-O Has You Covered

When it comes to Transformers, everyone has their favorite.  I happen to be a Bumblebee man, but they also make Kre-O construction kits for Optimus Prime, Megatron, Sideswipe, Prowl and more.  In total Hasbro has 12 Kre-O Transformer construction kits.   While we only tested Bumblebee, I think it is safe to assume that the other Kre-O Transformer construction kits work in exactly the same way.

Kreons, Don’t You Dare Forget the Kreons!

In addition to your Transformer you also get 3 mini-figures Kreon figures.   The Kreon figures, while very similar to the mini figures you might get in a Lego set are actually cooler than standard mini-figures.  The arms and legs of the Kreons attach with a ball joint so they have much better articulation.  I know, it sounds a little ridiculous to be talking about the articulation of Kreons, but it really does make a difference.  In addition, the Kreons have a number of attachments and accessories.

Conclusion:  Kre-O Transformers, For Kids (and their Dads) Who Love Building and Transformers

Here is an easy test to determine if your kids will like the Kre-O Transformers.  Do they like Transformers?  Do they like Legos?  If you answered yes to the above two questions, your kids will love Kre-O Transformers.  The quality of the Kre-O construction set felt very solid and the fact that it works with other brick based building sets means you don’t need to invest in a whole new system.  Just make sure the kids understand that the toy does not convert from robot to car, you need to take it apart and rebuild.

If the idea of a toy that does not require batteries, but does require your kids to follow directions and build is appealing to you, then the Kre-O Transformers would be a great choice for the upcoming holiday season.   Now, if you will excuse me,  I need to search YouTube for the old Transformers cartoon from my childhood.
