If you ask your son or daughter what they want to do for fun, building a Vinegar Production Facility is probably not at the top of the list. However, with the Hydrodynamic Deluxe Building Set from Bridge Street Toys, making a model of a Vinegar Production Facility is almost as much fun as making a Toothpaste Factory!
What In The World Are We Talking About?
Earlier we reviewed the Girder and Panel Building sets and loved them. These sets let kids build towers and structures, all while learning the principals of architecture. What could be better than building tall structures? Building tall structures that have water! The Hydrodynamic Deluxe Building Set takes the Girder and Panel building theme and adds water, pumps, valves, tanks and pipes into the mix.

Who Knew Playing With Water Could Be So Educational?
When you first think of water and building, you might think of little kids and bath toys. This is absolutely not the case with the Hydrodynamic Building Set. The kit is for ages 10 and up and really involves some sophisticated principals of building and fluid dynamics. With parts like a float valve, tilt square, ball flow meter and turbine velocity meter – this kit is all about learning physics and fluid dynamics.
Eating Ice Cream = Easy. Building An Ice Cream Factory = Challenging.
The manual for the Hydrodynamic Building Set is really more of a jumping off point than a step by step building guide. They do have steps for building the Vinegar Facility, but with the other structures – like the Ice Cream Factory, there is just a picture of the finished structure. For some kids, especially younger kids, initially it may be frustrating not having a step by step building guide. However, not having a step by step guide is probably a positive in the long run.
The idea of the Hydrodynamic building set is to encourage children to experiment, build and learn. With Lego, the goal is to build the structure on the front of the box. With the Hydrodynamic building set, the goal is to learn about fluid dynamics and physics via experimentation.
Mix and Match with All the Girder and Panel Building Kits
If you have any of the other Bridge Street Toys Girder and Panel building kits, you can use them with the Hydrodynamic kit. All the girders, beams and panels are interchangeable – so you can use parts from another building kit to build an even bigger water tower. In addition, everything in all the Girder and Panel kits is HO scale (1/87th actual size) so if you are building a city, the dimensions of all the kits will work well together.
Conclusion: Hydrodynamic Building Sets by Bridge Street Toys
We loved the Girder and Panel Building Kits that we reviewed a few weeks ago. Those were true building kits that kids could jump right into and start building. The Hydrodynamic Building Set is fantastic and fun, but it takes a lot more work and patience to get to the pay off. Before you can start having fun with water, you need to think, design, build, cut tubes and test.
In a strange sense, I see this kit as more of science kit than a true building kit. It is a fantastic science kit and teaches fluid dynamics in a hands on and fun manner. In fact, it is a great kit for doing middle and high school level science fair projects. Children ages 10 and up who love science and building and have patience, will love the Hydrodynamic Building Sets. Kids who are looking for something that they can quickly snap together, with step by step instructions, should look elsewhere.
