We have reviewed lots of gadgets at Dad Does so we don’t normally get stumped when it comes to what a gadget does. Things tend to fall into neat categories – wifi hotspot, streaming TV device, fitness tracker, etc.
The Helium Hotspot is the rare gadget that does not fit neatly into one category. It certainly encompasses some of the most buzz worthy terms…
- IoT (Internet of Things)
- Open Source
- People’s Network
In short, the Helium Hotspot allows you to create a hotspot for IoT devices. This is a publicly open and operated wireless network specifically for IoT devices and you can earn cryptocurrency (Helium) for being part of the People’s Network.
Still don’t get it? Here, watch this great explainer video from the Helium folks…
Our Experience With the Helium Hotspot
Now that you sort of understand what Helium is, please watch our full video review of the Helium Hotspot –
Should You Buy The Helium Hotspot?
Yes, No and Maybe.
Honestly, trying to answer this is above our pay grade. Will the Helium network be huge in 2 or 3 years and the people who helped build it, rich from the cryptocurrency they earned? I have no idea but I do know Helium has raised millions of dollars from some very tech savvy investors, so they see the potential.
Helium is actively working with companies to develop IoT devices that make use of the LongFi Helium network. The more devices that are developed, the more profit potential from the Helium cryptocurrency.
So while we can’t make a recommendation based on the profitability of mining Helium, we can say the Helium Hotspot worked well and was fairly easy to setup and configured. Finally, there is something cool about being part of an open source, People’s Network…let’s just hope more people join us!
