Skylanders. If you are a parent to a 6+ year old, do I really need to explain what Skylanders are? You have probably spent past holiday seasons searching for that one Skylander Giant your son needed to have. Or maybe your daughter dug the Swappable Skylanders…you know, the one that was sold out everywhere. Raise your hand if you have had the unfortunate experience of stepping on one of the traps from Skylanders Trap Team…
Well, buckle up Moms and Dads, because Skylanders are back and now they have awesome vehicles.
Skylanders SuperChargers – More Exploring, More Ways to Play
For the two of you out there who have no idea what Skylanders are – here is the brief rundown…
Skylanders is a video game (made for all major game systems) that allows you to bring real action figures into the video game. You get a portal and via that portal you bring your figures into the Skylands world. There have been a number of different episodes (games) in the Skylander saga, but the basic idea is to defeat Kaos – a short evil dude (ever notice evil guys are always short) who seems intent on making a mess of the Skylands.
New for 2015 is the Skylanders SuperChargers. This new episode introduces vehicles into the world of Skylands for the first time. Here is the info –
“Skylanders SuperChargers takes kids on a wild ride as they drive the mountainous terrains, dive the deep sea environments and fly the big blue skies of Skylands like never before with amazingly detailed vehicles, many of which feature moving parts that will play in the real world and come to life in the game via the Portal of Power®. Packing some major star power, the game includes two of Nintendo’s iconic characters reimagined as Skylanders — Turbo Charge Donkey Kong and Hammer Slam Bowser — available exclusively in Skylanders SuperChargers Starter Packs for the Wii U system, and in Skylanders® SuperChargers Racing Starter Packs for the Wii system and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
The trailblazing innovation of Skylanders SuperChargers is realized when players take the helm of powerful, tricked-out land, sea and sky vehicles that are playable in both the physical and digital worlds in a high octane action-adventure videogame. Skylanders SuperChargers offers a rich story-driven gameplay experience filled with vehicle-based and on-foot adventures, combat, puzzles, mini games, activities and platforming, set within a variety of all-new compelling environments. The game features a brand-new class of heroes that is distinct with fresh moves, powerful attacks and all-new weapons. SuperChargers also have special in-game abilities that help Portal Masters fight Kaos. Twenty new SuperChargers character toys and 20 new vehicle toys will be available. Right out of the box, the game also features an all-new Racing Mode that blends high-octane, supercharged racing with combat, accentuated by power-ups, boosts, hazards and more.”
Yes, All Those Skylanders You Have Will Still Work
Fear not Moms and Dads, your investment in Skylanders will not go to waste. The figures you bought for the past adventures will still work in SuperChargers. That is the good news. The slightly bad news…if your child wants to get full power out of the vehicles and unlock all the new content, you will need to buy the new Skylanders SuperChargers characters and vehicles. On the plus side, they are beautiful…
You can use any Skylander in a vehicle, but match a new SuperCharger character to its vehicle and that vehicle becomes…wait for it… Super Charged!
It’s An Investment, But SuperChargers Continues the Skylanders Fun
The Skylanders SuperChargers Starter pack (game, portal, two characters and a vehicle) is currently selling for $49 on Amazon for all the major game systems. Considering that previous starter packs have been in the $70 range, the price is pretty reasonable. In addition, many video games today sell for over $50…and they don’t come up with portals and action figures!
If your child is into Skylanders, they will love the latest installment in the series. The vehicles add another level of play (racing, co-op games, multiplayer, exploring, etc) and as always the voice acting and story line are first rate.
If somehow you have a child who has never played Skylanders before, SuperChargers makes a great introduction into the world of Skylands. SuperChargers is easy to pick up and play, even if you have never played Skylanders before. If your child wants to make it all the way to the end it will take some work, basic problem solving and plenty of trial and error. If you are lucky, you will be called away from doing the dishes to help your child out…for hours on end!
