Sometimes the stars do align and you can have it all! Here at Dad Does we are clearly Drone addicts. We have marveled at the control and agility of tiny drones such as the Micro Drone 2.0.
Today is like Christmas for us, because just moments ago Extreme Fliers launched an Indiegogo campaign for their Micro Drone 3.0 – a drone that can live stream its video directly to the DodoCase VR on your head!
How Can A Drone This Small, Do This Much?
The Micro Drone 3.0 is truly tiny, but don’t let its small size fool you. Here are some of the key features of this drone –
- Auto Leveling Flight, Easy To Fly
- Capable of Inverted Flying For Fun Stunts
- Live Steaming Video (720p x 1280HD at 30 FPS)
- First Person View Head Mounted Display (works with Google Cardboard)
- Can Fly in 45mph Winds
- 300 Foot Range
- Smallest Micro Gimbal
- Modular Design
- 3D Print New Parts
- Control with RC or Smartphone App
FPV Drone Racing Anyone? Welcome To The Future
This is where things start to get wild. As the Micro Drone 3.0 will work with super cheap Virtual Reality headsets ($20 and under -you insert your phone) like Google Cardboard and DODOCase VR, Extreme Fliers sees Drone racing leagues starting up. You put on your VR Headset and race your Micro Drone 3.0 against a competitor. We will of course have to test this to see how it works in practice, but in theory it sounds incredibly fun!
This is On Indiegogo, So Will It Even Happen?
A very fair and wise question to ask. We normally don’t cover crowdsourced projects since many of them are filled with hype and fail to deliver the goods.
The reason why we believe in the Micro Drone 3.0 is because we have reviewed the Micro Drone 1.0 and Micro Drone 2.0 and both worked as advertised. In addition, we have personally talked with the founder of Extreme Fliers – Vernon Kerswell at numerous trade shows and know the Micro Drone 3.0 has been in the planning phases for a long time. For these reasons we would feel comfortable supporting this project, but as with any crowdsourced project do your research and know the risks.
How Much Does The Micro Drone 3.0 Cost? Depends How Quick You Are!
As you can tell, we are pretty excited about the Micro Drone 3.0 and wanted to let all of our readers know about it as soon as possible. The Indiegogo campaign just launched on 6/16/15 at 9am EST and the first 200 backers can get a Micro Drone 3.0, HD camera, battery, charger, DODOCase VR and RC controller for $125 – that is 62% off retail!
My recommendation, if you are at all interested in this drone, stop reading this now and hop over to the Indiegogo campaign and back it while $125 offers are still available. They expect to ship in November, so consider it an early Christmas present for yourself.
Yes, We Will Review The Micro Drone 3.0
We absolutely will do a full video review on the Micro Drone 3.0 as soon as production models are ready. So, you can wait for our review, but the problem is the Micro Drone 3.0 will be retailing for $330 by the time our review is out. If you are quick, you might be able to still get one for $125 today.
We leave the risk/reward analysis up to you – we are too busy dreaming about FPV Drone Racing to think clearly at this point!
