Dad Does Holiday Gift Guide 2014
Games & Toys That Make You Laugh and Smile
(and might even teach you something)
Flying toys are cool. Robots that battle are always a treat. The thing is, sometimes it is the simple games, with great play value that end up being played with long after the holidays have passed. In today’s gift guide we present the top toys and games that will make the kids laugh and smile… and don’t tell the kids, but they might even learn a thing or two as well.

If I had a nickel for every math app on iTunes…I would need a math app to help me count all my nickels. The point is, math and counting apps are a dime a dozen (yes, I have loose change on my mind) so what is the big deal about Tiggly Counts? Tiggly Counts provides 5 number rods that you use in conjunction with the Tiggly Counts apps and the real, physical element makes all the difference in the world. The apps teach counting and math skills to younger kids, but most importantly, the apps are fun!

Robot Turtles by ThinkFun
Learning how to read? Where is that going to get you later in life…a job as a reader? On the other hand, teach your kids to program and now you are preparing them with a real marketable skill! Robot Turtles by ThinkFun is a board game that teaches young kids (ages 4+) the basic concepts of a programming language. The good part is the kids probably have no idea they are learning anything, they are having too much fun ordering you around as they are the programmers and you (the parents) are the dumb computers.

Telestrations – the telephone game sketched out. I know, doesn’t really sound like much of a game – does it? All I can say is play it and I dare you not to laugh hysterically at what plays out. This is a party game with no “winning” – it is just about sketching, guessing, sketching some more and laughing like crazy at what is drawn out.

For reasons I still don’t fully understand, moustaches are all the rage in 2014. Kids with moustaches…even better. While I may not get the fascination with moustaches, I do get why kids will love playing Moustache Smash from Spin Master Toys. Everyone gets a different moustache and needs to smash it down when they see a card that matches their ‘stash. Things get crazy fast – moustaches get passed around and the kids have a blast smashing and laughing.

K’NEX Typhoon Frenzy Roller Coaster Set
Riding on a roller coaster is fun, but building your own roller coaster is much cooler. The K’NEX Typhoon Frenzy Roller Coaster Building Set allows kids to build a pretty complex roller coaster…or something completely different. This is the great thing about K’NEX sets, you can follow the instructions or just use your imagination and build your own structures. Don’t tell the kids, but they are also learning architectural and spatial reasoning skills.
