Holiday Gift Guide 2014

Dad Does Holiday Gift Guide 2014
Top Blaster Toys for 2014

As parents we always teach the kids, “use your words.”  Sure, that is a good life philosophy, but sometimes you just want to blast something and let a barrage of foam darts do your talking for you.  Kids, we feel you, which is why in today’s Holiday Gift Guide we offer up some of the best blaster and shooting toys we have played with in 2014.  Let’s jump right into it…

Nerf N-Strike Elite Rhino Fire Blaster

Nerf N-Strike Elite Rhino Blaster

Fire 50 Elite Darts, 90 feet in 15 seconds! Do we really need to say more? The motorized Nerf N-Strike Elite Rhino Fire Blaster holds two drums, each with a 25 dart capacity and just looks so cool firing you will almost forget it has a somewhat insane $90 price tag.  We made the video below from a demo at a trade show, but we have not been able to get a Rhino Fire Blaster to test out.  The demo looked great, so we are putting on this list – but before I dropped $90 on a toy blaster, I would want to see an independent review.

Dart Zone Scorpion Gatling Blaster
Dart Zone Scorpion

Don’t like the idea of spending $90 on a blaster?  No problem – the Dart Zone Scorpion Gatling Blaster comes in at an easy to swallow $19.95.  Don’t let the low price fool you, you still get plenty of blasting fun for under $20.  In our testing the Scorpion had a range of 90 feet and could fire off 20 darts in about 20 seconds.  While the Dart Zone brand has their own darts, we did confirm in our testing that all those Nerf darts that are covering your house will also work in the Scorpion.

Air Storm Firetek Bow by Zing Toys

We have always been big fans of the Zing Toys bow and arrows, but this year Zing did the impossible – made the day longer!  Normally when it gets dark, the kids stop playing outside and come in and cause general havoc until bedtime.  Not anymore! The Air Storm Firetek Bow has arrows and a bow that light-up and look even cooler when the sun goes down.  The kids will be begging you to stay outside once it gets dark out! Check out our video review, this is the perfect toy to have at any sleepover.

Zano Bow from Zing Toys

Zano Bow from Zing Air

A large Mega Bow is great for some battles, but sometimes you want a bow you can conceal and sneak into battle.  In this case, you need to go with the incredibly cute and fun Zano Bow from Zing Toys.  The Zano Bow is small enough that the kids can play with it indoors, but it still packs enough power and accuracy to be fun for smaller scale battles.

Nerf Zombie Strike Slingfire
Nerf Zombie Strike SlingFire Blaster

When it comes to the Zombie Invasion, the question is not if, but when.  The Zombies are coming, that is purely objective fact, the only thing left to debate is the best way to battle them.  For us, the choice is clear – the Nerf Zombie Strike Slingfire.  Yes it has range, accuracy and a bunch of other features…but all that really matters is the very cool lever action blasting.  Fire, reload and fire again all with one hand…leaving your other hand free to point at and taunt the Zombies as you blast them away.

Nerf Rebelle Secrets and Spies Line

While we totally believe that boys and girls can enjoy the traditional line of Nerf Blasters, it is clear that those blasters are marketed to boys.  To help make the blasters more appealing to girls, Nerf has a whole line of Rebelle Secrets and Spies Blasters.  The great thing about the Rebelle blasters is that they are every bit as powerful and fun as the “traditional” Nerf Blasters.  After all, boy or girl, who doesn’t love blasting away a target?

Captain America Stealth Fire Shield
Captain America Stealthfire Shield

Sometimes the best offense is a good defense…especially when your defense is really an offensive weapon.  Confused?  Welcome to our world.  In any case, there is no confusion on the fact that Captain America is big again.  The Captain America Stealthfire Shield allows kids to shield themselves from attack and once their opponent is out of ammo, they flick their wrist, reveal the stealth blaster and fire back!  While the blaster does not have much range, it is great for imaginative play.
