We live in complicated times. You have the whole 99% vs the 1% in terms of wealth and powder debate. 1 in 5 American children wonder where there next meal will come from (source). 49 million people in America face hunger issues everyday (source). There are hardworking volunteers, working for incredible nonprofits, who pour everything they have into trying to raise money to provide food for people who need it. Then you have Zack Danger Brown, who has raised $60K in 7 days on Kickstarter, so he can make himself a potato salad. We live in complicated…no, let’s be honest…we live in screwed up times!
We Love A Good Joke, But This Is Ridiculous
If you are not familiar with Kickstarter, it is a site that allows you to crowd fund any project. Perhaps you are a musician trying to raise money to produce your first album – you explain your situation, set a goal amount and ask for pledges. You can give back perks for the pledges, maybe you mention pledgers in a song. Plenty of great projects have been started on Kickstarter…this Potato Salad thing is not one of them!
Presumably as a parody, Zack Danger Brown launched a campaign to make potato salad for himself. The goal was $10. I’ll admit it, the campaign was funny, a spoof on the normal Kickstarter campaigns, completely with possible risks (“It might not be that good. It’s my first potato salad.”). You read it, you laugh, maybe you help the guy raise $10 bucks – end of story.
But the story didn’t end there…it just got started. It has been picked up by numerous media outlets and as of 11am EST on 7/9/14 he had raised $59,618.
If You Give To His Campaign, I Will Kill You
I know, I am setting a bad example for the kids here – generally not a good idea to threaten to kill people. Insider tip for the kids at home – if you do threaten someone, don’t do it on the internet, in a big bold font, with your name attached. Anyway, back to this Potato Salad thing. Look I get that it is funny. You want to read it, laugh and send it to all your friends – have at it.
The thing is, there are people all around the world who are struggling to eat right now. Right here in America, the land of the plenty, 1 in 6 people face hunger issues. Incredible nonprofits like Feeding America are doing tireless work to feed people in need of food. They can take a $1 donation and stretch that into 8 meals for people in need.
If everyone who gave money to this Potato Salad guy instead gave to Feeding America, they could provide 476,944 meals to people in need!
Here Is What You Do…
I get it, we all want to laugh and be part of something funny. So, here is what you do. Go check out the Potato Salad Kickstarter thing. Have a good laugh and shake your head in disbelief. Then, INSTEAD of making a Pledge, head over to Feeding America and make a donation. You get to have your fun, but also help people in need….oh, and as a bonus, I won’t have to kill you.
