Do you ever look at your TV and say, “Hey, you’re not so smart. My phone can stream movies from Netflix and let me watch cats playing piano on YouTube – but you just sit there showing me reruns of Seinfield.” Okay, let’s just skip over the oddness of having a conversation with your TV and get to the heart of the matter…your TV could be much smarter, it just needs an implant!
The Roku Streaming Stick claims to be the simple implant that will turn your average TV into a Smart TV. Does the Roku Streaming Stick have the brains to pull this off? Let’s find out in our video review of the Roku Streaming Stick –
Small, Simple and Smart – A Winning Combination
The Roku Streaming Stick ($49) works exactly as advertised. Plug the device into an HDMI jack on your TV. Give it power via a USB jack on the TV or AC outlet. Sync once with your wireless router. You are done! You now have access to over 1,000 channels of videos and movies. Of course if you want to use services like Netflix and Amazon Prime, you will need to setup accounts with those companies.
You Still Can’t Beat A Good Remote…
Yes, you can control the Roku Streaming Stick via an app on your phone. You can also do cool things like send your photos and videos from your phone to the Streaming Stick, so you can view them on your TV. Still, for basic TV watching – I love that Roku provides a basic remote control. A remote is something you can throw on the sofa and not care if your kids drop it. Call me old fashioned, but I still like controlling my TV with a remote control.
Yes, The Roku Streaming Stick Does Make Your TV Smarter
Our experience with the Roku Streaming Stick was completely positive. Setup is easy, navigating the content on the Roku is straight forward and the HD video quality was impressive. We also love how portable the Streaming Stick is, we can definitely see parents bringing this on vacation. Simply put, if you are looking to increase the IQ of your TV (and you have an open HDMI input), the Roku Streaming Stick is an excellent choice.
Now, if only Roku would introduce a stick that could make me smarter…
