Anyone who spends a lot of time around technology knows about “Tech Rage.” This is when technology that is suppose to make our life easier, goes terribly wrong and just stresses us out to point that we start throwing things and swearing we are going back to an abacus. So, we take great interest when a company like HeartMath tells us that they have a technology that is “proven to help users quickly release stress and rebalance the mind and emotions.”
You Had Us At Release Stress
Being a parent is incredibly rewarding and unbelievably stressful at times. The HeartMath Inner Balance Lightning Sensor ($119) is an app and sensor that you connect to your iPhone or iPad. By training your breathing and thoughts with the app, you can improve your Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and reduce stress and improve focus.
Here is the claim from HeartMath – “Synchronizing your breathing with your heart rhythms while focusing on positive emotions has been shown to reduce the negative effects of stress, improve relaxation and build resilience with just a few minutes of daily use.”
Clearly this is something we had to test out.

The Science Behind HeartMath and Inner Balance
When you first hear about HeartMath, it just sounds like simple meditation or relaxation breathing exercises. In truth, the whole science of Heart Rate Variability is very sophisticated and very different than meditation. We reviewed the HeartMath emWave 2 product in the past, so please check out that post where we go over the whole science behind HRV. You should also go to the HeartMath research page which will explain the research to this stress reduction and coherence training.
The Inner Balance technology is based on 20 years of research and is successfully used by more than 10,000 health professionals to help patients reduce stress and anxiety. While the science can get complicated, HeartMath has done a great job of creating a simple and easy to understand app. By showing HRV data in real time, the app teaches us to use our mind and breathing to produce a coherent heart rhythm pattern and this makes us less stressed, more aware and filled with energy. What over tired and stressed out Mom or Dad would not love that?
The App Keeps Things Simple And That is A Great Thing
By now your heading is probably spinning with terms like HRV and coherence – but the great thing is you don’t really need to understand any of this to use Inner Balance. As the video shows, the app is very simple to use. You breath in and out and try to focus your mind. The app provides easy to understand real time feedback – different colors to show your state of coherence. You get pretty diagrams that show how you are doing and all your data can be sent to the HeartCloud for easy access and sharing.
Does Inner Balance Help You Feel Better?
Yes…if you use it! As with an training program there are two parts to consider. First, is the training program well researched and backed by science? To this point, the Inner Balance, backed by 20 years of research and studies absolutely passes the test. The second issue is will users adhere to the training program. On this point, things get a little trickier.
Inner Balance recommends you do at least 3 sessions a day, for at least 5 minutes per session. In addition, they recommend you do at least one 15 minutes session per week. This really is very reasonable and absolutely doable, but you still need to make the time to do the sessions. If you do make the commitment to put the time into the training, you really do start to feel better.
Make It A Game And Watch People Play
The folks at HeartMath seem to understand that the biggest challenge to success with their program is getting people to use the app. To this end, they have introduced gamification to the Inner Balance app. You get points and have achievements, awards and goals you hit as you do more sessions. In addition, if you use the HeartCloud there is even a leaderboard.
Does all this Gamification work? Yes. You really find yourself doing more sessions so you can reach more achievements and unlock awards. If you need more motivation, share your results with a friend and instruct them to give you grief if you don’t share results three times a day.
Conclusion: Inner Balance Can Bring Some Calm To Your Stressful World
When we reviewed the HeartMath emWave 2 product the biggest negative was the price. At over $220 it was a large expense, for a technology you were not sure about. The Inner Balance App and Sensor brings the price down to $119 (or less when on sale) and offers the advantage of being able to do sessions with just your iPhone and a small sensor. The app is very well done and keeps the complicated science hidden away and focuses more on making it fun and easy for users to do sessions. If you are looking for a drug free way to reduce stress in 2014, the Inner Balance App and Sensor is a great choice.
